Sorting is an essential skill that students need to learn in their early education years. With this set of sorting mats, students can sort 16 different objects by want or need.

What is included?
  1. 2 (two) sorting mats (8 sorting pieces per mat (with and without text to describe object))
  2. 1 (one) reader - printable (16 page booklet)
  3. Lesson plans (how to use what's included)
  • First (read the booklet), Then (complete the sorting mat)
  • Skills Targeted by These Activities
  • Potential IEP Goals for Skill Mastery
  • Other activity ideas for this topic

Students sort onto the following mats:
  • Needs
  • Wants

How do I use this in my classroom?

I print on white cardstock, laminate, cut out and add Velcro. During center time or during "free" time, these sorting mats are readily available for students to work on. Depending on ability level, I give the student both sorting mats to work on at once.

You can also use the sorting mats to create a file folder activity or game.

This sorting mat made assessment of wants and needs for my SPED population so easy! I paired it with the adapted book which was a great combo! It was easy for students to engage in and complete with and without adult support! Thank you Mrs. D!

This set is great for assessing my student's understanding of the difference between wants and needs. I really like how you use the familiar concept of sorting. That makes it easier for my students to understand.
