Students sort onto the following mats:

How do I use this in my classroom?

I print on white cardstock, laminate, cut out and add Velcro. During center time or during "free" time, these sorting mats are readily available for students to work on. Depending on ability level, I give the student both sorting mats to work on at once.

You can also use the sorting mats to create a file folder activity or game.

I was able to use this activity as part of their science exploration for Properties of Matter. It helped them to identify, sort and relate to items in their everyday world. It also lead into discussions on how to stay safe with some of the hot objects and how to use some of the cold objects. The pictures were clear and the children were able to connect/label them.
